Interviews

Ian Hunter

1st March 2008, Market Harborough

Iconic singer frontman of Mott the Hoople spoke for a very quick five minutes before he went on stage on his solo tour. Not the chattiest of interviewees, Ian didn't give much away...

Market Harborough isn't too far away from where you started your musical career in Northampton, is it a bit like a home-coming for you?

Ian: Well I was in Milton Keynes the other night. I've played Northampton a few times, there's some people here tonight, so it's...once a year or so.

There have been many different aspects to your career since those days in Northampton, to Mott the Hoople to your solo career. What would you say were the highlights so far?

Ian: I don't know.

Right! [Laughs] Is it very different touring solo in your own name in compared to a band?

Ian: Yeah, I mean a band is a diplomatic..Mott was a diplomatic situation so you didn't get all your own way, y'know. I mean the whole fun of being a solo artist in the final analysis it's up to me. It doesn't really come up that much with my guys but..er...that's the difference, y'know.

Do you ever get tired of doing it?

Ian: No. I don't have to do it, I could've stopped doing it 10, 15 years ago. I don't do it that much because if you do too much you get bored. But if you do a bit now and again, like y'know this is a 'cruise stick' sometimes when you've got a band and all that kind of thing, and it's fine.

So how many dates are you doing on this tour?

Ian: 10. This is the 9th.

Will you be glad to finish it?

Ian: No, it's fine, it's great.

Tell me about your latest CD.

Ian Hunter © Nick ElliottIan: Shrunken Heads came out last May. We're doing a little bit of that tonight. It's a very odd set, nobody's going to know what I'm doin'. And then I have to start on the next one as soon as I get back.

Do you think most people come her hoping to hear the old ones?

Ian: They might do, but that's their problem.

[Laughs] You've got new recods to sell and they're the ones you want to concentrate on?

Ian: No not even that. I mean I'm doing stuff, outakes from solo albums and so on too y'know what I mean?

  Yeah.

Ian: Just to annoy 'em! [laughs]

Well I shan't take up any more of your time, Ian, thanks for talking to me.
